Villanova's patron saint

When it came to naming the Augustinian Order’s first educational institution in Australia in 1948, the name Villanova was chosen because St Thomas of Villanova is patron of studies in the Order; as well, it is one of the most common names for Augustinian schools internationally.

youth homelessness initiatives at Villanova

Villanova College planned and presented a Youth Homelessness Conference as a development of its promotion of social justice. It attracted fifty students and ten staff from five of the Catholic secondary schools south of the Brisbane River: Villanova, Lourdes Hill College, San Sisto College, Loreto, and St Augustine’s College (Springfield).

Mary - Mother of Good Counsel

For almost 600 years the Augustinian Order has honoured Mary under the title of Mother of Good Counsel, based on an ancient fresco of that name. An annual feast day is on 26th April.

Mary - Mother of Consolation

The Blessed Virgin Mary is venerated as Mother of Consolation, because through her, God sent Jesus Christ the Consoler to the world. At least since the seventeenth century, "Our Lady of Consolation" or "Our Lady of the Cincture" is a key title with which the Order honours the Virgin Mary.

A busy end to the school year

Schools are busy places throughout the academic year but in the closing weeks of the final Term have a heightened level of activity all their own. This was true during November and early December in Australia’s two Augustinian-owned schools, Villanova College at Coorparoo in Brisbane and St Augustine’s College at Brookvale in Sydney, which each enrol over 1,100 male day students. These colleges have operated since 1948 and 1956 respectively.
