Parish of South Yarra

The parish serves two inner-city churches, St Joseph’s off Chapel Street, and St. Thomas Aquinas’ close by St Kilda Road in a very diverse and multi-cultural environment where affluence meets great need and challenges.

Since 1975 the Parish of South Yarra has been in the care of the Augustinians, the initial Augustinian presence in Melbourne going back to the first Archbishop James Alipius Goold OSA. The parish ministry has always been associated with pastoral involvement and chaplaincy at the nearby Alfred Hospital.

The parish serves two inner-city churches, St Joseph’s off Chapel Street, and St. Thomas Aquinas’ close by St Kilda Road in a very diverse and multi-cultural environment where affluence meets great need and challenges.

As a witness to the Augustinian charism of the community at the service of the Church and wider society, the parish demonstrates its commitment to the disadvantaged through emergency housing units for short-term accommodation and other outreach services through the generous assistance of a team of volunteers from the parish and beyond.

The old parish convent building is now leased to the Haven Foundation to provide accommodation for those living with enduring mental ill-health.

In the last few years, a vibrant new ministry directed to younger people YAM (Young Adult Ministry) was developed.

The Parish is also committed to the welfare and safety of children in our care.
