An Augustinian priest from the Philippines will be in Australia from 11th – 18 February 2015 to offer an intensive course named “Issues in Augustinian Theology” at the Catholic Institute of Sydney.
He is Rev. Dr Czar Álvarez OSA. He completed his religious studies and academic formation in Rome: a licentiate from the Pontifical Biblical Institute, and a doctorate in theology from the Augustinian. Presently he is a member of the San Agustin Centre of Studies at Quezon City near Manila, and also works at the University of San Agustin, Iloilo City. He is active in teaching, writing scholarly articles, and giving academic seminars and spiritual retreats.
At the Catholic Institute of Theology in Sydney, the course until he offers can either by audited or taken for credit. It will introduce students to St Augustine, his life and works, and the world in which he lived. This involves the fundamental historical and cultural milieus of Manichaeism, Scepticism, Neo-Platonism, Donations, Pelagianism and Aryanism. Theological topics then studied include soteriology, sacraments, grace, creation, evil, knowledge of God, Trinity and ecclesiology.
