On the 2nd of February, the Villanova College community gathered in Goold Hall to celebrate the Eucharist with the College chaplain, Fr Peter Wieneke, OSA and College Campus Minister, Fr. Saldie Resolado, OSA. The opening Mass marks the beginning of the school year 2021. It is also a Mass of the Holy Spirit; a time to ask for the gifts of the Holy Spirit to overshadow everyone in the Villanova community and the extended Villanova College families. And the theme for the Mass is on the first reading from the book of Samuel narrating the moment when Samuel was called by God. Samuel’s response to the call is the template for everyone who responds to God when called to be prophets/prophetess in their given time. “Here I am”, that was the answer of Samuel. “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.”
After the homily of Fr Peter Wieneke, OSA invited the staff members to hearken to the call and take a pledge to promote the Augustinian Education where the values of interiority, community and search for truth are the focal thrust of teaching and learning with the students.
He then asked the staff members to dedicate themselves to learning and care for the poor in response to the demand for social justice within and beyond the gates of the College in Coorparoo.
After the Mass, Mr Mark Stower presented the new set of Senior Leaders to the College community; Louis Henderson as College Captain, Thanasi Keskinidis as College Vice Captain and Luke Palmer as Student Council President. They will be leading their cohort in upholding the values of Villaman and keeping “Vincit Veritas” as their spirit. The motto for this year that will also guide the community members of Villanova is “Humble in Confidence yet Courageous in Character”. (Fr Saldie Lie Resolado OSA, Campus Minister, Villanova College)
